Study for Mockers (O281) in Mildura Art Gallery (M68). According to Galloway the oil represents a crowd jeering at a disgraced Spanish admiral who stands draped in red on steps above them. Background of the walls of Toledo, and church with Christ figure. It could also represent the mocking of Christ, with mendicants to right on the steps and the mockers to left. If so, the episode referred to is when the chief priests forced Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor of Judea, to crucify Christ. Jesus was flogged, dressed in a scarlet (or purple) robe and a crown of thorns was placed on his head. (Matthew 27:29)
